learnings #5

1. Find a customer who truly understands the work and work for them.
>> Especially in Services industry, the customer who doesn’t understand or appreciate work can be painful, and those who perform the services still has to act like he/she is the god. How lucky will it be to find those who understand the work.

2. What if your purpose is simply to build a good life? To raise kind children. To cook a little better each year. To read a few excellent books. To notice the seasons. To build meaningful relationships. To help others. To give time - and money if you can - to causes you care about.
>> To remind about what is it all for?

3. Hiring - smarts, ownership, passion, team work, ability, character. Hire for character, Train for skill.
>> Reminder about what to look for in hiring.

4. Kind and candid. When we look back, we always see that we haven't been candid enough.
>> It is so difficult to do.

5. Fight entropy with energy and intensity. Combat the routines and comfort, with energy.
>> This is the constant struggle, to fight the decline

6. Alpha - a magnitude better than the average (potential upside). Beta - fluctuating outcomes (predictability). High alpha, Low beta (higher than average, lower fluctuations) - is how to look at people evaluation. For early, uncertain work you prioritise upside. For mature functions, you prioritise steadiness. Processes should lower unpredictability but not stifle innovation.
>> Better than average, but unsteady – I see a lot of that, but need to remind and accept that this is the whole package.

7. Deliberate understaffing forces ruthless prioritization.
>> It was a reminder that being resource constrained helps sometimes.

8. 99th percentile in terms of outcomes (extraordinary outcomes) needs extraordinary effort.
>> A lot of it will not be seen

9. Type B represents the balanced, moderate human being who can feel and express emotion without being driven and without losing himself in uncontrolled emotional outbreaks. Type A is prone to heart attacks, Type C is prone to diseases as well due to emotional suppression and stress. The inability to process and express feelings effectively, and the tendency to serve the needs of others before even considering one’s own, are common patterns in people who develop chronic illness.
>> Emotional regulation, expressing feelings effectively – things to learn still

10. People struggle to comprehend existence of another dimension. You can’t persuade someone in 2D with 3D arguments.
>> At times, a realization like this can save some energy.
